Kevin G. Couloures, DO, MPH, is a pediatric surgeon who cares for critically ill children in Yale New Haven Hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). He specializes in sedating infants and children with serious injuries or illnesses, or who have undergone major surgery, such as congenital heart defect repair. He tells parents, “We have a team of clinicians, nurses and support personnel who are all motivated to provide the best care for your child.”

An assistant professor of pediatrics (critical care) at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Couloures’ research seeks to identify risks associated with pediatric sedation and ways to reduce them. What sets Yale’s PICU apart is the dedication of its staff, he says. “All of the PICU and sedation team providers care about ensuring the best possible outcome for all children.”

Dr. Couloures is especially excited by the latest research into fine-tuning therapy to take into account genetic differences. He serves on the board of the Society for Pediatric Sedation, an international organization.

Clinical Trials

New treatments for many conditions are tested in clinical trials, which ultimately bring lifesaving new drugs and devices to the patients who need them most. By participating in a clinical trial, you may get access to the most advanced treatments for your condition, and help determine their benefits for future patients.
