For Dickerman Hollister, Jr., MD, who is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology, caring for patients in a personal manner is a priority. “The best part of the job is establishing a relationship that is more than just medical care,” Dr. Hollister says. “My patients are also my friends."

Dr. Hollister sees many of his patients in follow up years—even decades—after treatment, cancer-free. “Hearing about their lives and their families, what they have been able to achieve and experience at least in part because of the care I have given, is the great reward of the profession,” he says.

To him, being caring, compassionate, and maintaining a sense of humor are important to the healing process.

“We do not have crystal balls,” he says. “We cannot predict how every patient will respond to treatment. But, what I can (and do) say is that whatever the outcome, I will always be with them, working as hard as I can to give the best possible care. We are on a journey together.”

Dr. Hollister has served as chief of staff at the Greenwich Hospital and as medical director of the hospital’s hospice program. He is past president of both the Fairfield County Medical Association and the Connecticut State Medical Society and has served on the boards of many health-related organizations, including local chapters of the American Red Cross, the Greenwich Health Association, the Leukemia Society, and the Breast Cancer Alliance.
