Anees Chagpar, MD, believes in patient-focused care and shared decision making. “I want to be my patients’ partner as they go through their journey of breast cancer,” says Dr. Chagpar, who is an associate professor of surgery (oncology) at Yale School of Medicine. She is also the assistant director for global oncology at Yale Cancer Center, through which she examines ways to reduce the burden of cancer around the world.

In addition to caring for her patients and teaching the next generation of breast oncologists, she led Yale’s effort to become the first National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Northeast to have a nationally accredited breast center. She is an active researcher whose most recent, groundbreaking work on breast-conservation surgery techniques was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. As a result of this research, “We have reduced the number of times a breast cancer patient goes to an operating room, improving care here and around the world,” she says.

Clinical Trials

New treatments for many conditions are tested in clinical trials, which ultimately bring lifesaving new drugs and devices to the patients who need them most. By participating in a clinical trial, you may get access to the most advanced treatments for your condition, and help determine their benefits for future patients.
