Abeel A. Mangi, MD, MBA, is surgical director of the Structural Heart and Cardiac Valve Program at the Yale New Haven Heart & Vascular Center. He has done pioneering work in using both traditional, minimally invasive and catheter-based techniques to repair and replace aortic and mitral heart valves. Dr. Mangi has participated in almost 3,000 heart operations during his career, and performs about 225 surgeries per year. He focuses on complex and reoperative cardiac surgery.
Dr. Mangi says patients who come to Yale Medicine for heart valve care have the advantage of access to an involved and deeply committed team that includes highly trained surgeons, cardiologists, nurses, cardiac anesthesiologists, radiologists and echocardiographers, among others.
“It’s a group of diverse and extremely skilled people who all come together to take care of every single one of our patients. We endeavor to schedule our time around our patients’ visits, so that our patients can see all of us at the same time instead of having to schedule multiple visits,” he says.
In addition to treating patients, Dr. Mangi is focused on constantly improving how people think about value in health care, or achieving the best possible outcomes for patients at the lowest possible costs.
Asked about his long-term professional goals, Dr. Mangi says: “I am interested in changing the way health care is delivered in America today. Despite our tremendous technical know-how and commitment to excellent results, there is a lot we can improve. We can drive toward better outcomes for patients, greater efficiency, cutting-edge operational capability, interpretation of “big data” and lower costs. We need to realign our incentives and structure such that patients, doctors, administrators and payers are all on the same side of the table. If we can accomplish these things as an industry, we will remain in a position to deliver the best health care in the world.”
Dr. Mangi is an associate professor of surgery (cardiac surgery) at Yale School of Medicine who has been invited to speak about his clinical and managerial experience all over the world. He is a principal or co-investigator in several dozen clinical trials and studies. He is recognized internationally as an expert in complex and reoperative cardiac surgery, as well as the surgical- and catheter-based repair and replacement of diseased heart valves.
