The immune system is normally supposed to protect the body against disease. However, in some cases, the immune system can go haywire and wreak havoc on its own body, causing diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and even cancer.

Over the last 20 years, as researchers have connected more diseases to the immune system, they have also made incredible strides in treating difficult and often debilitating diseases. This knowledge has led to breakthroughs such as so-called “cancer vaccines,” now in development, which can train the body to recognize and fight off tumors.

“To see how different aspects of immunology are involved in human disease has been an incredible surprise,” says Dr. David Hafler, an immunologist who is Yale Medicine’s chief of Neurology. He is also a cancer immunologist for Yale Cancer Center. “I’m fortunate to be part of a group of scientists that has started to understand and treat diseases that were considered untreatable when I was in medical school.”

Clinical Trials

New treatments for many conditions are tested in clinical trials, which ultimately bring lifesaving new drugs and devices to the patients who need them most. By participating in a clinical trial, you may get access to the most advanced treatments for your condition, and help determine their benefits for future patients.
