Depression can be a debilitating mood disorder that results in lost productivity and quality of life. It is a constellation of mood and behavioral changes, including feelings of hopelessness and apathy, as well as changes in eating and sleeping patterns. Large numbers of both men and women experience these sorts of changes at difficult points in their lives. Symptoms of depression affect a person’s ability to function both at work and in general.
“The majority of patients with depression experience significant benefits from treatment,” says Gerard Sanacora, MD, PhD, director of the Yale Depression Research Program, and co-director of the Interventional Psychiatry Services at Yale New Haven Hospital. “And for those who don’t respond to common treatments, Yale offers hope with other treatments, such as novel medications and methods of brain stimulation.”
